4/10 Progress

The plan for today’s meeting for the Desk Friend includes testing the various prototype mock-ups created by Cole and Zavan.

The prototypes are listed here:

Prototype 1

Prototype 2

Prototype 3

The tests, created by Kamyar and Justin should provide us with an inderstanding of how exactly our final product should look. Below is a list of each of the tests and the results.

  • Fit test – test what supplies fit inside the prototype
    • Prototype 1 – Due to the lip used on the chocolate box, the pockets are slightly awkward to access, though the size is almost large enough to fit a comfortable amount of office suppllies
    • Prototype 2 – Due to the overall size, the main idea of this prototype is to be more compact, and as such, even though it holds fewer objects it holds a good amount
    • Prototype 3 – the circular holes do not fit large office supplies comfortably, though the large box on the inside is very large the main function fails to hold all the objects
  • Integrity – About how durable the final product will need to be compared to the prototype
    • Prototype 1 – Even though the main compartments were made of cardboard and scotch tape they were more durable than expected though still fragile. The main body was structurally sound due to the square shape
    • Prototype 2 – The “stems” of prototype 2 that hold the lamp and fan are fragile and are prone to come off. Even if it was made of a more durable material it would still be worrisome
    • Prototype 3 – The cardboard did not hold up to the fit test, and even if it was made out of hard plastic the large area with no supports around the holes would cause issue
  • Size test – make sure the prototype is a comfortable size
    • prototype 1 – the overall size is a little small, though that might be due to the chocolate tin lid
    • Prototype 2 – The compact size lends prototype 2 an air of comfortably when placed on a desk
    • Prototype 3 – Too large to fit comfortably on a desk
  • Airflow test – test where the fan will blow air
    • Prototype 1 – As long as the fan is a little higher, adjustable perhaps, it should blow a comfortable amount of air
    • Prototype 2 – The fan on, being situated on a “stem”, necessitates a weaker fan making the overall performance weaker
    • Prototype 3 – fan too large and would be uncomfortable blowing such a large volume of air straight at your face from the desk
  • Drop test – will the prototype survive a fall off of a desk
    • Prototype 1 – the rugged design prevented serious damage from the fall from desk height
    • Prototype 2 – The flimsy stems snapped off when dropped from desk height
    • Prototype 3 – The large size make the fan and main box prone to detaching in a fall, though both of the components are durable

Overall, prototype 1 is probably the best choice and will serve as the framework for our final project. Prototype 2, while interesting and with unique benefits, is not feasible within our budget, and prototype 3 is simply too large and cumbersome. For our final version of the project we plan on building out prototype 1 to be slightly larger and more convenient.
